If you’re hunkering down over the holidays, nothing warms the body and soul like a bowl of hot soup.

Add a glass of complementary wine, and you have a meal.

Throw a log in the fireplace, and you have a cold weather-busting evening.

We’ve experimented with a number of soup-and-wine pairings over the years, but had never given any thought to what would go well with corn chowder. So during a recent meal with friends, we decided to do some experimenting.

After trying several different types of white wine, the winner was (cue the little drummer boy)… a German Riesling. The runner-up: an “unoaked” Chardonnay.

Other soup and-wine pairings worth a try this holiday season:

* New England-style clam chowder with a well-oaked Chardonnay.

* Beef barley soup (a personal favorite) with Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah.

* Cream of chicken soup with Viognier.

* French onion soup with Gamay.

* Gumbo with Zinfandel.

* Chicken noodle soup with Chenin Blanc.

* Butternut squash with a rich Chardonnay.

* Lentil soup with Sangiovese or Chianti.

As you can see, there are pairings that work well regardless of the type of soup you like or the type or style of wine you prefer. Do some experimenting, and give yourself the gift of a new wine-and-food pairing you can enjoy throughout the winter.
